John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first underwater park in the United States, was established in 1963. The park spans 25 miles in length and 3 miles in width. It is named in honor of John D. Pennekamp, an esteemed Everglades conservationist and former newspaper editor for the Miami Herald.
