Robert McHenry arrived in California during the Gold Rush and later became one of the wealthiest and most influential men in the Central Valley, operating vast cattle ranches, a successful bank, and extensive agricultural holdings that helped shape Modesto’s early economy. He commissioned the mansion as a gift for his wife Matilda McHenry, and the home became a social hub for the growing community, hosting lavish gatherings and visits from prominent California figures. After Robert’s death in 1890, Matilda continued to reside in the mansion until her passing in 1906, after which the estate passed through several hands before the McHenry family eventually donated the property to the city.
A devastating fire in December 1974 nearly destroyed the mansion, leaving only the exterior walls standing after an arsonist set the historic structure ablaze. The community rallied behind restoration efforts, and between 1976 and 1983, craftspeople and historians meticulously rebuilt the mansion using period photographs, original architectural drawings, and traditional construction methods to ensure historical accuracy. The restored mansion reopened as a house museum operated by the McHenry Mansion Foundation, offering the public an authentic window into the lifestyle of a wealthy Victorian-era California family.
Today, visitors can take free docent-led tours through rooms filled with period furnishings, original artwork, and decorative items from the McHenry era, including the formal parlor, the elegant dining room, and the family’s private upstairs quarters. The mansion’s carriage house on the property serves as a visitor center and gift shop, while the adjacent McHenry Museum, housed in Modesto’s original 1912 library building, complements the mansion experience with exhibits on local history, Native American artifacts, and the agricultural development of the Central Valley.
