Ashcroft, a town located roughly 10 miles south of Aspen, was established in 1880 by silver prospectors. In just two weeks, the town sprang to life with the formation of a Miner’s Protective Association, a courthouse, and a street grid. Within three years, Ashcroft boasted a population of around 2,000 inhabitants, surpassing Aspen in size. It served as a remarkable testament to the prosperous silver mines in the area. Unfortunately, the silver deposits eventually ran dry and anticipated rail connections never materialized. By 1885, Ashcroft’s population dwindled to a mere 100 summer residents, and the town faced severe financial difficulties, teetering on the brink of bankruptcy.
Throughout the early 20th century, the town experienced intermittent periods of prosperity and decline. However, due to the intervention of a concerned owner, Ashcroft received protection and underwent ecological restoration. Presently, the Aspen Historical Society manages this once-thriving ghost town, preserving its historical significance.
