Lexington, Kentucky is a consolidated city-county and the second-most populous city in Kentucky, with a population of approximately 322,570 as of the 2020 census. Known as the “Horse Capital of the World,” Lexington is renowned for its hundreds of horse farms, world-class race courses, and rich equestrian heritage.
Lexington was named in June 1775, 17 years before Kentucky became a state, after the Battles of Lexington and Concord. The city was founded when a party of frontiersmen led by William McConnell camped at what is now McConnell Springs, naming the site Lexington upon hearing of the colonists’ victory.
The city developed as a center of commerce and culture in the Bluegrass region. In 1974, Lexington consolidated with Fayette County, creating one of the first city-county governments in the United States. Today, the city maintains a nonpartisan mayor-council form of government.
