History

Branson was named after Reuben Branson, a postmaster and general store owner who settled the area in the 1880s. The town grew slowly until the publication of The Shepherd of the Hills by Harold Bell Wright in 1907, a novel that drew national attention to the Ozark Mountains. Tourism began in earnest in the 1950s with the opening of Silver Dollar City, a theme park celebrating Ozark heritage and craftsmanship.

Branson is known as the Live Music Show Capital of the World, with dozens of theaters hosting country, gospel, bluegrass, and rock performances year-round. The city’s entertainment tradition began with the Baldknobbers Jamboree in 1959, the first family-friendly variety show in the area.
