Joplin

Joplin was founded in 1870 and grew rapidly due to its rich lead and zinc deposits. The city became one of the most important mining centers in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At its peak, Joplin was known as the “Lead Belt” of America. The discovery of these mineral resources attracted thousands of prospectors and entrepreneurs, transforming a small frontier settlement into a thriving city of over 30,000 residents by 1900.
