Everett anchors the northern edge of the Seattle metropolitan area along Port Gardner Bay, where the Snohomish River meets Puget Sound. The city is best known as the home of Boeing’s largest assembly plant, the biggest building in the world by volume, where wide-body jets take shape behind doors the size of football fields. Everett was founded in 1890 as a planned industrial city by the Everett Land Company, backed by railroad magnate James J. Hill and East Coast investors. The city was named for Everett Colby, the young son of one of the original investors. Hill’s Great Northern Railway arrived in 1893, transforming Everett into a major timber processing and shipping center. By the early 1900s, the waterfront bristled with lumber mills, shingle factories, and paper plants, earning Everett the nickname the City of Smokestacks. The city weathered the 1916 Everett Massacre, a violent clash between sheriff’s deputies and members of the Industrial Workers of the World that left seven dead and shaped labor history in the Pacific Northwest. During World War II, Everett’s shipyards supported the war effort, and the postwar period saw a gradual economic shift. The true transformation came in 1967 when Boeing opened its massive assembly plant, cementing Everett’s identity as a center of aerospace manufacturing for decades to come.
Start your visit at the Future of Flight Aviation Center, where guided tours take you inside the Boeing factory to witness 747, 767, and 777 jets being assembled on moving production lines. The Boeing Store offers aviation-themed merchandise you will not find anywhere else. Head to the Port of Everett’s Waterfront Place, a mixed-use development with restaurants, shops, and a public promenade overlooking the marina and Jetty Island. The Schack Art Center downtown features rotating exhibits by Northwest artists, glassblowing demonstrations, and hands-on workshops. Catch an Everett Silvertips hockey game at the Angel of the Winds Arena, which also hosts concerts and community events throughout the year. Visit Funko Field for minor league baseball with the Everett AquaSox, a High-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, where the atmosphere is family friendly and the views of the Cascades are spectacular.
The Boeing Everett Factory is the essential sight, a structure so vast it could contain 75 football fields beneath its roof. The factory’s sheer scale becomes apparent the moment you arrive, with aircraft components delivered by the Dreamlifter, a modified 747 cargo plane that lands at Paine Field adjacent to the plant. Historic downtown Everett along Hewitt Avenue showcases well-preserved early-20th-century architecture alongside independent coffee shops, breweries, and boutique retailers. The Port of Everett maintains a working waterfront where you can watch container ships, fishing vessels, and recreational boats navigate the deep-water harbor. The Historic Everett Theatre on Colby Avenue opened in 1901 and continues to host live performances. Legion Memorial Park occupies a bluff overlooking Puget Sound with sweeping views of the Olympic Mountains and Whidbey Island across the water.
Jetty Island is a two-mile-long man-made sandbar accessible by a free passenger ferry during summer months, offering warm shallow water, sandy beaches, and kiteboarding conditions that attract enthusiasts from across the region. The Everett Waterfront Trail connects the marina to Howarth Park, tracing the shoreline for walking, cycling, and watching sea lions haul out on docks. Forest Park, the city’s largest green space, encompasses nearly 200 acres with old-growth forest, a swim center, picnic shelters, and trails winding beneath Douglas firs and western red cedars. Spencer Island, a reclaimed wetland at the Snohomish River delta, provides excellent birdwatching with more than 200 species documented, including bald eagles, great blue herons, and migratory waterfowl. Harborview Park delivers panoramic views of Port Gardner Bay, Gedney Island, and the Olympic Mountains at sunset.
Naval Station Everett, the Navy’s most modern base, operates along the waterfront and is home to guided-missile destroyers and a Coast Guard cutter. While public access is limited, the Naval Station Everett Park just outside the gates offers interpretive displays and views of the ships at dock. The Imagine Children’s Museum, housed in a former bank building downtown, provides three floors of interactive exhibits including a rooftop play area with views of the Sound. Funko Headquarters, creator of the ubiquitous Pop vinyl figures, anchors downtown Everett with a flagship store that displays larger-than-life versions of pop culture characters from Marvel, Star Wars, and Harry Potter. The Flying Heritage and Combat Armor Museum at Paine Field preserves rare military aircraft and armored vehicles in flying and running condition, with aircraft from World War II through the Cold War era.
Summer from June through September offers the most pleasant weather, with mild temperatures in the low to mid 70s and the lowest chance of rain. This is the prime season for the Jetty Island ferry, outdoor festivals along the waterfront, and clear views of the surrounding mountain ranges. Spring brings blooming rhododendrons in Forest Park and gray whale migrations visible from the shoreline. Fall delivers crisp sunny days perfect for hiking and cycling along the waterfront trail, with fewer crowds than summer. Winter months from November through February are cool and rainy, but the Boeing factory tour operates year-round and the Silvertips hockey season runs through March, making indoor attractions an excellent cold-weather alternative.
